An Evening That Touched My Heart: The True Beauty of the Auction Industry

This blog post was written by Scott J Douglas, Professional Auctioneer

Saturday night was an incredibly special and inspiring evening for me as I had the privilege of being the auctioneer for Cerebral Palsy Alberta!

As I listened to their team share the incredible work they do throughout the Calgary community, and across Alberta, I was deeply moved by their passion, dedication, and genuine love for the people they serve. Their commitment to disability advocacy is truly phenomenal, and the difference they make in people's lives is something worth celebrating!

There was one moment that touched me deeply. As I watched the video they had created to showcase their work and the lives they impact throughout the community, I found tears in my eyes. It was a powerful reminder that behind every organization are people with enormous hearts, incredible stories, and a mission to make this world a better place for everyone.

As someone who has lived in a wheelchair for over 21 years, disability advocacy holds a very special place in my heart. I understand that a disability is only one part of a person's story, and that every individual deserves opportunities, acceptance, dignity, and the chance to live a beautiful life.

This is one of the many reasons I love the auction industry so much!

Yes, I love the excitement of the auction ring, the sound of the bids, and the opportunity to help organizations raise money for their causes. But what means even more to me are the incredible people I meet along the way. People who become more than colleagues, more than clients, and more than familiar faces at events. They become friends, supporters, and sometimes even lifelong friends who touch your heart in ways you never expected.

Every fundraising auction gives me the opportunity to meet extraordinary people who are making a difference in this world. Saturday night reminded me once again that my career is about so much more than an auctioneer's gavel.

It's about people. It's about compassion. It's about community. And above all, it's about love.

To everyone with Cerebral Palsy Alberta, thank you for the phenomenal work you do and for allowing me to be part of such a meaningful evening. You inspired me more than you may ever realize!

I may arrive at an event as the auctioneer, but so often, I leave with something far more valuable than a successful auction: a heart full of gratitude, new friendships, and a renewed inspiration to keep making a difference.

Never underestimate the power of an organization that chooses to serve others with love. Sometimes, the people we are there to help end up inspiring us the most.

With a grateful heart,

Professional Auctioneer & Fundraising Advocate

We acknowledge that what we call Alberta is the traditional and ancestral territory of many peoples, presently subject to Treaties 6, 7, and 8. Namely: the Blackfoot Confederacy – Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika – the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, and the Tsuu T’ina Nation and the Métis People of Alberta. This includes the Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Metis Homeland. We acknowledge the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
