one by one®: Cerebral Palsy Alberta

Cerebral Palsy Alberta, an affiliate of the international organization United Cerebral Palsy, is a nonprofit that supports individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. The organization’s mission is to improve the lives of children and adults with disabilities in Alberta. Cerebral Palsy Alberta accomplishes this through a variety of programs and services, and it also collaborates with other groups to promote awareness, acceptance and understanding to help the individuals it serves live, learn and work in their communities.

In 1976, the organization was founded by a family with a child who had cerebral palsy and few avenues for support. Cerebral palsy is used to describe a group of conditions affecting body movement and muscle coordination. There are several types of cerebral palsy, and it develops in an estimated three out of every 1,000 children.

We acknowledge that what we call Alberta is the traditional and ancestral territory of many peoples, presently subject to Treaties 6, 7, and 8. Namely: the Blackfoot Confederacy – Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika – the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, and the Tsuu T’ina Nation and the Métis People of Alberta. This includes the Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Metis Homeland. We acknowledge the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
