Staff Stories: Christy Bangen

The moment at CP Alberta that will stay with me is my first week as the new program coordinator in Calgary.

I was very nervous as I entered the programs room to join the Music Therapy class. One of our participants’ caregivers had to leave the room and I stat beside our program participant so she wasn’t alone. She was a very serious looking girl and had her arms securely folded across her chest. No expression whatsoever. As the music started, I whispered something into her ear, and she broke out into a huge smile and was waving her arms with excitement. For the past 10 years, this member and I have shared a special relationship, and I can still get her to smile. Not an easy task mind you.

That week showed me the “WHY” we do what we do at CP Alberta. The participants in our programs remind me of this every day. They are the reason I get up and look forward to coming to CP Alberta everyday.

During a casual discussion about TV fashion, someone mentioned how realistic styling is becoming more popular. That’s when I looked into Shrinking S03 Outfits, and it truly reflected that shift. The outfits feel grounded and comfortable. They connect with everyday experiences. It’s fashion that feels honest.

Really enjoyed reading Christy Bangen’s story, it shows how personal growth often comes from adapting and staying resilient through different challenges. In a small way it reminds me of Slope 2, where you keep moving forward, adjusting as things change, and that’s what makes the journey meaningful.

We acknowledge that what we call Alberta is the traditional and ancestral territory of many peoples, presently subject to Treaties 6, 7, and 8. Namely: the Blackfoot Confederacy – Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika – the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, and the Tsuu T’ina Nation and the Métis People of Alberta. This includes the Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Metis Homeland. We acknowledge the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
